I’ve seen several people on social media setting intentions at the beginning of each new month. The idea is to meditate every morning on a few things you’d like to work on, and hopefully by the end of the month these changes will become habits. I think it’s a great idea!
September is my very first month setting intentions. Earlier this week, I took a few minutes to think about the things that were impacting my happiness and productivity and I came up with the following list.
1. Be present and focus on the task at hand.
I tend to be a long-term and big-picture thinker. Apparently, this is the “intuition” part of my ENFP brain. It can be exciting to think about the huge amount of possibilities in life, but I’ve noticed it can take away from my enjoyment of the “now.”
My first intention this month is to live in the moment. This is super important with a toddler who is growing and changing each day. I don’t want to miss anything because I’m too busy daydreaming about things years down the line.
2. Be kinder to myself.
I generally do speak kindly to myself, but I think I could do better. When I’m having a bad day, I tend to dwell on the things I don’t like about myself (my lack of focus, my anxiety). Sometimes, I overthink situations from the past and feel guilt and resentment.
This month, I’m trying to treat myself like a friend, embrace my good qualities (my creativity, my determination, my strength) and accept the things I can’t change.
3. Don’t compare.
Everyone has a different path in life. It’s one of the things that makes life beautiful and interesting! It can also set us up for unfair comparisons and unhappiness.
Instagram is a wonderful platform and one of my favorites, but it’s hard sometimes to not get caught up in comparisons. I will try to remember this month that “comparison is the thief of joy.” I’ll also be trying to limit my time on Instagram to about 10 minutes a day.
4. Be happy at rest.
I have a lot of goals: be a great wife and parent, continue to fix up my house, explore the world, work on my fitness, write every day, excel at work… the list goes on and on.
As you can imagine, sometimes I find it reeeally hard to relax. I tend to fidget and focus my mind on what I haven’t yet accomplished.
I often burn myself out by being this way. This month, I want to make a conscious effort to be happier and calmer when I’m not doing anything. I need to remind myself it’s ok (and necessary!) to rest and relax.
That being said, it’s midnight right now as I’m writing this. I’m off to bed guys! Are you setting intentions for September? Let me know in the comments.
